Annemals!

Anne's first time to the zoo.
Another photo-journey.

We bit the bullet this morning, got off our butts and drove the borrowed car halfway cross the island for the zoo.
The Chinese New Year festivities were still going full-swing at the zoo, with a lion-dance performance at the entrance. Anne seemed interested enough, but we were a little too close to the rather loud cymbals. Still haunted by scenes of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113862/">Mr. Holland's Opus</a>, we decided to zip into the quieter confines of the zoo.

Having been frequent visitors to the zoo, we drafted up a plan of attack. Anne's energy and attention would last an hour, an hour and a half tops. We headed straight for the Children's World on tram and planned to make the way out on foot.

When we arrived at Children's World at the Zoo, Anne, as always, seemed more interested in the ceiling fan at the tram station than the actual zoo itself. We tried distracting her with <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-donkey.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-donkey.php','popup','width=400,height=306,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">donkies</a>, goats and <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-pig.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-pig.php','popup','width=400,height=267,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">pot-bellied pigs</a>. She didn't seem impressed. So we threw in the 500 pound bull.

We brought her to a small wading pool and decided to dip her feet in the water. She squirmed and raised her tiny little feet. It wasn't until later I realised the water was really cold.

After wiping off our cold feet, we headed into the small shaded aviary. It's been so long since I looked at my book of bird names, so some birds I knew, like this <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-yelloworiole.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-yelloworiole.php','popup','width=400,height=267,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">black-naped oriole</a>, and <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-bird.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-bird.php','popup','width=267,height=400,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">others I couldn't identify</a>. Maybe some of you can help us out.
Anyway, after a few rounds with guinea pigs, rabbits and a bit of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Anne's energy bar approached the red. We needed to make haste on our exit strategy.

On our way out we passed by Cat Country. I simply cannot resist Cat Country, so Anne would have to endure my need to photograph the big cats. She sat through <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-jaguar.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-jaguar.php','popup','width=400,height=267,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">the jaguars</a>.
Anne's fuel cells were really running low at this point so Faith decided to go full speed on the pram. I bumbled behind as fast as I could, accidentally taking the occasional photo of <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-puma.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-puma.php','popup','width=400,height=267,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">a puma</a> and <a href="http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-lion.php" onclick="window.open('http://tribolum.com/archives/2006/02/01/zoo-lion.php','popup','width=400,height=267,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false">a lion</a>.
By the time I caught up with Anne and Faith, Anne had her head in her hands, leaning on the little tray table attached to the front of her pram. She looked as if she'd been up studying the whole night and was about to take a nap. After 3 seconds of trying, she decided enough was enough. She wanted out.
So a hundred meters from the entrance, Faith reached into the pram, lifted the kiddo and ran towards the exit in a display of superhuman strength and endurance. Anne was pleasantly surprised by our renewed gesture of devoted servitude.

She really holds this family together, this beautiful superwoman wife of mine.
